Shut Off Valve

The valve to turn water on / off is located in your basement and should be marked with a “Shut Off Valve” tag.

Drain Valve

The drain for your system may be located outside near the backflow or may be in your basement. This drain must be closed during the watering season and left open during the non-watering season. It is tagged as “Drain Valve“.

Backflow

Your system is equipped with a “Backflow”. This is a device located on the outside of your home that prevents any contaminated water from re-entering your drinking water.

Ball Valve

The Backflow has two ball valves that must be in the open or “on” position (parallel with the pipe they are on) during the watering season and left in a 45 Degree position during the non-watering season to prevent freeze damage.

Test-Ports

The most common backflow, the PVB, has 2 test-ports (an RP backflow will have 4 test-ports) that must be in the closed position during the watering season and left in the open position during the non-watering season to prevent freeze damage.

Turning the Water on

Whenever water is introduced to the Backflow device or the valve box in the ground the shut off valve must be OPENED SLOWLY!! There are small plastic parts within the Backflow and valves that can be broken if water is introduced too quickly and water is allowed to slam through these plastic parts.

Controller

The Controller to your system is generally installed in your garage. To learn how to turn the system on/off or to change the watering program on your controller, visit our “Instructional Videos” page by clicking on the button below

Failure to do so can result in frozen and cracked pipes and damage to the Backflow device. On the back of your Watering Recipe card you will find the general steps to draining your backflow.
